First of all, I would like to say that it is not my intention, at all, to launch any war against anybody, but only to make some people understand my feelings about all this. If I can open some eyes, I will be more than satisfied.
I would also like to thank Hard Rock France for the email of apology that I received (even if they didn’t do it in a public way); but I would like to state that I don’t share their point. I understand that there is nothing personal on the cover and that they only pretended to be funny, but it appears that we don’t have the same sense of humor; not me; not my family; not my friends and neither most of my fellow female musicians and fans.
Sobre la portada de HR magazine…
En primer lugar, me gustaría aclarar que no es mi intención en absoluto lanzar una guerra contra nadie, sino sólo exponer mis sentimientos acerca de todo esto. Si puedo abrir algunos ojos, me daré por más que satisfecha.
También me gustaría dar las gracias por el correo de disculpas que he recibido de Hard Rock (aunque no haya sido de manera pública), pero puntualizar que no comparto su punto de vista en absoluto. Entiendo que no hay nada personal en la portada y que sólo pretendía ser graciosa, pero parece que no tenemos el mismo sentido del humor, ni yo, ni mi familia, ni mis amigos, ni la mayoría de mis compañeros músicos y fans.
If the intention was nothing other than being “funny” then I would have been appreciated if I had been asked before, because I was never consulted about this. Apart from this, I find that there are funnier choices than this one, which is, in my opinion, vulgar and sexist. To be honest, I don’t see what’s so funny about boobs, dildos and drugs, nor a kind of sex-party in the last supper (something that, besides, has nothing to do with the fest announced). I don’t see it, other than, yet again, the so very hackneyed subject about sex (=women), drugs and Rock & Roll which, it seems, will be associated with rock and metal forever and ever (I cannot help but remember certain covers of heavy metal albums in the 80’s…).
I was told that it was a caricature (in fact a copy of a similar previous painting, but this time with my head replacing another) and I’m not questioning the skills of the artist, but again, my concept of a caricature differs from this one. I thought that a caricature was about emphasizing some features of the caricaturized: yet nothing is further from the reality, at least in my case.
Unfortunately, we live in a world where our role as women is still questioned; above all in this industry, where it seems that we are still nothing more than an ornament. Believe me or not, I’ve suffered from sexism in this business several times (even if it is in a subtle way, I recieve it) and I have also been fighting against this image of women particularly in metal for years, so I don’t think this kind of humour is appropriate for the cover of a music magazine. Not when some of us have to deal with it day after day. Just a bit of tact would have been appreciated too. I’m simply fed up with it, you know? And if you want me to be honest, I even feel embarrassed to be part of this “circus”, because I have never seen such disrespect (for me this is still disrespect, yes) in any other genres, other than in metal. This really hurts when you love to do metal music and when you are working hard (harder than men, believe me) to do your best in your career as a musician. I’m a musician and I’m a woman yes, but in the 21st century, or so I thought.
Of course, everyone is free to represent or sell themselves or their company as they want, but in this case, it is my image which is being used and I haven’t had the choice to decide. I also think that people are not really aware of the harm, that they don’t really see that, unfortunately, there are still some people who see us, women, in a similar way to the one represented in the cover. This kind of deed doesn’t do anything but feed that image. I cannot help but wonder what would someone who is or not involved in metal think about this fest when they see this cover: do you really think that they would consider it funny? Maybe yes, and that’s a problem too.
I hope my words are well understood and I also hope that in the future, when someone wants to make something “funny”, that they think about the consequences it could have.
Last but not least, I would like to thank everyone who showed me their support in this matter, especially my lovely colleagues and friends in Eve’s Apple and Diabulus in Musica as well as my friends and fans everywhere.

Aparte de esto, creo que hay opciones más divertidas que ésta, que es, en mi opinión, vulgar y sexista. Para ser honesta, no veo qué tienen de gracioso tetas, consoladores y drogas, una especie de sex-party en la última cena (algo que, además, no tiene nada que ver con el festival anunciado). No veo más que, de nuevo, el tópico tan manido de “sexo (= mujeres), drogas y Rock & Roll”, que parece ser que va a acompañar al rock y el metal por los siglos de los siglos (no puedo evitar recordar las portadas de determinados álbumes de heavy metal en los años 80 …).
Me dijeron que era una caricatura (en realidad, una copia de una pintura anterior similar, pero esta vez con mi cabeza remplazando a otra) y yo no estoy cuestionando las habilidades del artista, pero de nuevo, mi concepto de una caricatura difiere de éste. Pensé que una caricatura trataba de enfatizar algunas características del caricaturizado: nada más lejos de la realidad, al menos en mi caso.
Por desgracia, vivimos en un mundo en el que todavía se cuestiona nuestro papel como mujer, sobre todo en esta industria, donde parece que seguimos siendo un mero ornamento. He sufrido el sexismo en este negocio varias veces (aunque sea de una manera sutil, sigo captándolo) y también he estado luchando en contra de esta imagen de la mujer en particular en el mundo del metal durante años, así que no creo que este tipo de humor sea apropiado para la portada de una revista de música. No cuando algunas de nosotras tenemos que lidiar con ello día tras día. Tan sólo un poco de tacto habría estado bien. Simplemente estoy harta de esto. Y para ser sincera, hasta me siento avergonzada de ser parte de este “circo”, porque nunca he visto esta falta de respeto (para mí esto sigue siendo falta de respeto, sí) en otros géneros que no sean metal. Esto realmente duele cuando te gusta hacer este tipo de música y cuando estás trabajando duro (más que los hombres, créeme) para hacer lo mejor en tu carrera como músico. Soy músico y soy mujer, sí, pero en el siglo XXI, o eso creía yo.
Por supuesto, todo el mundo es libre de venderse o representarse a sí mismo o a su empresa como quiera, pero en este caso, es mi imagen la que se está utilizando y no he tenido la opción de decidir. También creo que la gente no es realmente consciente del daño, que en realidad no ven que, por desgracia, todavía hay algunas personas que nos ven a las mujeres de forma similar a la representada en la portada. Este tipo de acción no hace más que alimentar esa imagen. No puedo evitar preguntarme qué pensará alguien relacionado o no con el metal de este festival al ver esta portada: ¿de verdad creéis que lo consideraría gracioso? Tal vez sí, y eso es un problema también.
Espero que mis palabras sean bien interpretadas y también espero que en el futuro, cuando alguien quiera hacer algo “divertido”, piense en las consecuencias que ello podría tener.
Por último, me gustaría dar las gracias a todos los que me han mostrado su apoyo, especialmente a mis colegas y amigas de Eve’s Apple y Diabulus in Musica, así como mis amigos y fans de todo el mundo.
